Eugene O'Neill is remembered through an annual festival by residents of Danville CA, the US town where the playwright created some of his memorable works. Danville, to O'Neill, was what Mysore was to R K Narayan. But it hasn't occurred to us to celebrate the man who put Mysore on the global literary map.

Nobel and Pulitzer prize winner Eugene O'Neill spent seven years (1937-44) in Danville, to where he had moved after selling his house in Georgia. During his Danville days O'Neill wrote as many as six plays. His longtime nurse Albertoni, a guest speaker at the recent commomeration function at Danville, observed, "Mr O'Neill was never the one to get excited about anything; he used to be quiet always.....a very calm man".

Wouldn't it nice if we can have an annual 'do' to celebrate RKN, our 'quiet man' ?

This is an excellent idea that will highlight a famous son of Mysore, but more importantly, will serve to focus attention on Mysore. However, perhaps Kuvempu would be a better candidate for the first "attempt" because the people would by and large be more interested in his name than in R.K.Narayan.

Yes.  We must celebrate R.K. Narayan not just because he was a Mysorean but also due to his contribution to the literary world.  He is an immortal and should be remembered for generations to come.

The point is well made, for purposes of wider participation. One could, perhaps, think of setting up a foundation for celebrating Mysore's literary sons, in which a spectrum of interested people and agencies could be associated - surviving relatives and admirerers of Mysore's literary figures, publishers of their works, 'sahitya' organisations, department of culture, heritage committee, university departments dealing in literature and local history, and, above all, a residents organisation such as MGP. Bringing them together may not be easy, but it is well worth the attempt. Wonder if Dhvanyaloka could take the initiative in exploring possibilities.

One could get an idea of how we could go about evolving a Mysore foundation to celebrate our literary figures from www.eugeneoneill.org. Among the highlights of the Danville festival are:

Stage performance of one-act play 'Hughie' at the Barn of Tao House, where the playwright lived.

A pre-show reception at Tao house (ticketed)

Exhibition of memorabilia (borrowed from local museum and library) at the Town Green, in front of the library.

A 45-minute walking tour of Danville, focussing on O'neill's life in the town.

Seminar and discussion programme.

An RKN festival is a wonderful idea.  Besides the ideas you have posted based on the O' Neill festival, I think screening of the episodes of the immensely popular teleserial Malgudi Days could be organised. RKN could be introduced to children, or teenagers through special book readings.  Arundhati Nag, wife of the late Shankar Nag(who made Malgudi Days), is a trustee of our organisation and we could talk to her about staging a play, if possible, based on any of RKN's works. But all this would cost a great deal wouldn't it?  What would we do about that?

Churmuri, an up and sprinting weblog hosted by media colleagues for Mysoreans has launched a campaign to mobilise opinion for doing something more substantial than naming a road or hosting a seminar in tribute to RKN. Why doesn't someone like URA, or, for that matter, rest of us, speak up for RKN. Churmuri makes a persuasive case for us to do so. Click here to read more..
